The basics

For hikers, the main access point to Fisher Towers is the Fishers Tower Trail, a rugged, 2.6-mile (4.2-kilometer) one-way trek that passes a series of dramatic rock formations. Many visitors, however, will see Fisher Towers from the water, on guided white-water rafting trips that range from half- to full-day outings. This portion of the river combines flat water with relatively small rapids, so it’s popular with families and novice rafters. It’s also possible to combine a Fisher Towers rafting trip with other desert experiences, such as 4WD tours.

Things to know before you go

  • Bring plenty of water and sun protection. There’s little shade and no water along the hiking trail.
  • If you have a pair of binoculars, bring them along. It’s sometimes possible to spot rock climbers scaling the cliffs as you walk. 
  • This trail is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

How to get there

Fisher Towers’ parking area is located on Fisher Towers Road, 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Moab. The final 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) of the road to the trailhead is unpaved, though suitable for most 2-wheel drive vehicles. Most Fisher Towers rafting tours depart from Moab, with some offering pickup and drop-off at area hotels.

When to get there

For hikers, Fisher Towers is a year-round destination, though in the summer it’s best to start early to avoid the midday heat. The most popular time for white-water rafting at Fisher Towers is from mid-March through late October; weather can be cool at the beginning and the end of the season.

Popular White-Water Rafting Spots in Moab

Fisher Towers is among the most sought-after rafting spots in the area, but there’s plenty more to choose from. One favorite is the Colorado River at Westwater Canyon, with Class III and Class IV rapids that are more challenging than those in the Fisher Towers area. Just south of Moab, the Green River and the Colorado River converge above Cataract Canyon. Here rafters tackle a spectacular 100-mile (161-kilometer) river section that can be rafted in a single day or over multiple days.
